He had children’s choirs singing many of the forty-eight Bach fugues. I’ve got copies of these things, where he arranged them for a children’s choir to sing. The things that the Swingle Singers do today he was doing in Brazil with the children.
-Mindinha Villa-Lobos, from a fascinating conversation she had with Hugh Ross and Richard Gaddes, during the 1971 production of Villa’s Yerma. An unedited transcription of the conversation is included in Lisa Peppercorn’s book The World of Villa-Lobos in Pictures and Documents. I assume these arrangements for choir are in the Museu Villa-Lobos; it would be great to get them out to choirs around the world. Or, indeed, to the Swingle Singers.
